Groceries are one of the biggest monthly expenses for most families. A little planning each week can save money without cutting down on good food. Here is a simple method anyone can follow.
Step 1: Know what you spend now
For two or three weeks, keep every grocery bill or note each UPI payment for groceries. Add them up. This is your starting point. Most families are surprised by how much goes on small, unplanned purchases.
Step 2: Set a weekly amount
Divide your monthly grocery budget by four, and keep a little extra for festivals and guests. A fixed weekly amount is easier to follow than a monthly one.
Step 3: Plan the week's meals
Sit down once a week, for example on Sunday, and decide the main meals for the week. You do not need a strict menu. A rough plan such as "dal-rice three days, rajma one day, sabzi-roti daily" is enough to know what to buy.
Step 4: Check what you already have
Before writing the list, look in the kitchen. Use up open packets and vegetables first. This alone reduces waste a lot.
Step 5: Write a list by section
Group your list into staples (atta, rice, dal, oil), vegetables and fruit, dairy, and household items. Buy only what is on the list.
Smart buying tips
- Buy staples in larger packs if you have dry storage; they are usually cheaper per kilo. Compare price per kg, not price per packet.
- Buy vegetables more often in smaller amounts so less goes bad.
- Seasonal vegetables and fruit are usually cheaper and fresher.
- Avoid shopping hungry. It leads to extra snacks in the cart.
- Limit packaged snacks and soft drinks. They add up quickly and are expensive per kilo.
Track and adjust
At the end of each week, compare what you spent with your weekly amount. If you went over, find the one or two items that caused it. Small changes over a month make a real difference.
Ordering online
When you order online, the cart total, delivery charge and fees are shown before you pay. Combining your weekly list into one order often crosses the free-delivery amount and saves the delivery fee.
