Every packaged food product sold in India carries information on its label. Knowing what to look for takes only a few seconds and helps you avoid expired, overpriced or unsuitable products.
MRP — maximum retail price
The MRP is the highest price the product can be sold for, and it includes all taxes. A shop can sell below MRP, but should not charge more than it. If a product's MRP has been overwritten or covered with a sticker, ask about it.
Best before and use by
- Best before means the product is at its best quality until that date.
- Use by or expiry is about safety; do not eat the product after this date.
- Always check the date, especially on dairy, bread, packaged snacks and baby food.
FSSAI logo and licence number
Packaged food sold in India should show the FSSAI logo with a licence or registration number. This shows that the manufacturer or packer is registered with the food safety authority.
Veg and non-veg mark
- A green dot inside a green square marks vegetarian food.
- A brown dot or triangle inside a square marks non-vegetarian food.
Check this mark if your family follows a vegetarian diet.
Ingredients list
Ingredients are listed from the largest amount to the smallest. If sugar or oil appears near the top, the product contains a lot of it. People with allergies should read the full list every time, because recipes change.
Net quantity
Check the weight or volume. Two packs at the same price can contain different quantities, so compare price per 100 g or per kg.
Nutrition information
Most packaged foods show energy, protein, fat, sugar and sodium per 100 g or per serving. Comparing these numbers between brands is an easy way to choose a better option.
Storage instructions
Some products say "store in a cool, dry place" or "refrigerate after opening". Following these instructions keeps food safe after the pack is opened.
When your order is delivered
Check the date, seal and packaging when an order arrives. If something is expired, damaged or the seal is broken, report it the same day so it can be replaced.
