Mehndi is part of almost every wedding and festival. A deep, long-lasting colour depends on good henna, skin preparation and aftercare.

Choose safe, natural henna

Natural henna paste is greenish-brown and stains orange at first, then darkens over a day or two. Be careful with products sold as "black henna" or instant black mehndi. These can contain a chemical dye that may cause serious skin reactions in some people. If a paste stains jet black within minutes, avoid it.

Before applying

  • Wash hands and feet with soap and dry them completely.
  • Do not apply cream or oil before mehndi; it blocks the stain.
  • Do any waxing or scrubbing a day before, not after mehndi.

While it dries

  • Let the paste dry naturally; avoid fans blowing directly on it.
  • Many people dab a mixture of lemon juice and sugar on the dried paste. It helps the paste stick to the skin longer.
  • Keep the paste on for as long as you comfortably can — six hours or overnight gives a darker colour.

Removing the paste

  • Scrape it off gently with a blunt knife or your fingers. Do not wash it off with water.
  • Avoid water on the area for several hours after removal.
  • Warmth helps the colour develop; keep hands and feet warm.

Aftercare for longer colour

  • Apply a little oil or balm before bathing to protect the design.
  • Avoid harsh soaps, detergents and bleach on the area; wear gloves for washing.
  • Avoid scrubbing, swimming and long hot baths for the first few days.

How long it lasts

Natural mehndi usually stays for one to three weeks, fading slowly as the skin renews. Palms and soles keep colour the longest.

Booking a mehndi artist

Ask to see photos of the artist's real work, confirm whether the paste is natural and freshly made, and agree the design, time and price in advance. For weddings, book early — artists get very busy in the season.
