The festive season brings gifts, sweets, new clothes, cleaning and decorations. It is easy to spend more than planned. A simple plan made a few weeks ahead keeps the celebration joyful and the budget under control.
Step 1: Decide one total amount
Look at your savings and regular monthly expenses, then decide one total amount for the festival. Keep this number written down where the family can see it.
Step 2: Split it into categories
A typical split might look like this (adjust for your family):
- Gifts and sweets for relatives and friends
- Clothes
- Home cleaning, repairs and small items
- Decorations, diyas and puja items
- Food and guests
- A small buffer for unexpected costs
Step 3: Make lists for each category
Write names for gifts, items for the puja and the groceries you will need for festive cooking. Lists stop impulse buying.
Step 4: Buy early, buy local
- Staples and dry items for festive cooking can be bought a week or two early.
- Compare prices for big items, but remember travel time and cost too.
- Local shops often give better service and can exchange items easily.
Step 5: Watch out for "offers"
- A discount is only a saving if you were going to buy the item anyway.
- Check the final price including delivery and other charges.
- Be careful with buy-now-pay-later and EMI offers on small items; they add up.
Step 6: Pay safely
- Pay by UPI or card to shops you trust and check the payee name before paying.
- Keep receipts and UTR numbers for big purchases.
- Never share OTPs or PINs with anyone claiming to give a festival "prize" or "refund".
Step 7: Book services early
Salon appointments, home cleaning and tailoring get busy just before festivals. Booking a few days early gets you a better time slot and less rushed service.
After the festival
Note what you actually spent in each category. Next year, this record makes planning much easier.
